POWER Harassment – At the WORKPLACE

In my last post, I touched upon the topic of showing empathy at the workplace. As much as it sounded like, we have further problems at hand to discuss.

Today, let’s talk about POWER HARASSMENT!

Power harassment is a form of harassment and workplace bullying in which someone in a position of greater power uses that power to harass or bully a lower-ranking person (Wikipedia). And believe me, it is a very common issue.

My Short Story- I had just taken up a totally new field and I understand that a lot was expected from me. First it started from unreasonable demands, transitioning to constantly interfering with my work routine and questioning my work-style to an extent when I was literally ‘scolded’ in front of other colleagues. It was heartbreaking, stress-inducing and down right insulting to work like this. But deep inside I had decided that I will move on and that too at a better place, which THE ALMIGHTY was kind enough to help me get through within a year.

Purpose is to spread awareness that if you are dealing with this, please try to make your way out of it. This is not something you are paid to bear. Try the following:

-Talk to Someone you Trust: Sometimes the other person, maybe your colleague can guide you how you can improvise and maybe the situation improves.

-Approach your Line Manager: Try to build such rapport with your line manager that you can report such matters to them. I would advise all managers to look out for signs of distress in their teams and try to investigate if such is the matter since many people are conscious to talk about seniors as it may hurt their careers.

-Approach the Human Resources Team: If the matter is getting out of hand, try to approach the trusted personnel in the HR Team. The HR team should also have such policies in place.

-Quit that Job: Easier said than done right? But ask yourself if you deserve this. Just keep a lookout for opportunities, build professional relations and switch if matters get out of hand. Try to have a side income in place.

Don’t be a victim, trust yourself and your abilities.

Hope this will make someone’s day!
