World Health Day

Taking care of your mental health is as important as any other priority in your life, for example, taking care of your body, your parents, your spouse or your kids. Being someone who has first-hand experience of being caught in this spiral, I can proudly say that I have made my mental well-being as my priority now.

Anything can disrupt your mental peace, these might include issues at the workplace, family politics or your self developed doubts. Therefore, on this World Mental Health Day, I would like to highlight a few facts and also ignite a thought process for some people who think this is somewhat of a hoax or anyone who suffers from it is either weak or an attention seeker!

As a first hand information, let me highlight what someone with mental issues such as Depression, Anxiety or Panic feels:

-A total loss of purpose
-Complete loss of energy
-No signs of Hope
-No Prayers or Meditation can make you feel better
-Stomach Issues are all time high
-You don’t want to leave the bed
-Nothing makes you happy

So, please avoid questioning the sufferer or telling them that:

-It’s all in the mind (Yes it is, but it is not a figment of imagination and has bodily symptoms associated with it)
-Get out of it already (Your body has a great chemical imbalance, it is not sometimes possible to just get out of it)
-Stop being Weak (If I was weak I would’ve died, I am fighting it well!!)
-Medications won’t work and you will become dependent (Agreed, no overdose but some prescribed ones can be taken to calm the body down)
-Go Out, Change your Mind (Nope, won’t help)

Try This:

-Listen without judgement
-Hold their hand, tell them whatever you share with me will be secure
-Don’t ridicule them
-Don’t trivialize their feelings
-Pray for them!

Hope this might change someone’s thoughts!
-Usman
